About The University

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was established in 1969 as the second university in Malaysia, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Located on the island of Penang, it became a research university in 2006. USM is also known as the "University in a Garden", with its beautiful scenic green campus overlooking the sea.

USM offers courses ranging from Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences to Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education. Currently, USM comprises 6 campuses locally and one abroad in India – all served by a total of 10,000 staff members.

The university also has 17 dedicated research centers for a wide range of specializations, including archaeology, medicine and dentistry, molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, and policy research and international studies. USM also provides consultancy, testing, and advisory services to the industry under the ambit of USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, the university’s special purpose commercial arm.

USM has an enrolment of more than 31,500 students, of which 21,500 students are at the undergraduate level and 10,000 at the postgraduate level. International students make up more than 8% of the total student population at USM. Since inception, USM has more than 173,000 alumni globally.

The USM Happiness Index continues to provide the campus community with 'feel good' factors. At this globally-preferred university, the sciences and the arts are integrated to create balanced and happy individuals.

Recently awarded The Most Entrepreneurial University of the Year by the Ministry of Education, USM added another feather in its cap when it was recognised by UNESCO as the preferred university for community engagement under the Asia-Pacific Community Engagement Network (APUCEN). In the recent THE University impact rankings against SDGs USM was ranked at no 49 in the world and ranked at 165 using the QS world University Rankings.

Since inception, USM has undergone various phases of development in graduating students to support the needs of the nation and, more importantly, functioning as an impetus for progress and nation-building. Based on its track record USM has been chosen by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education to implement the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) under its auspices – the only university in Malaysia that has been awarded the status. For the next 40 years, the university is preparing for a more challenging and unique future via the nurturing of a future generation that is values-internalised, with inter-cultural competency and 21st Century skills and is balanced between knowledge and character. In short, a person confident of his/her national identity, a nation builder and a global citizen.
