With a strong endorsement from the Sabah state government we have assembled a world class team of experts in hospitality & technology to work on the redevelopment of Jesselton Quay, aiming to transform it into a world class destination.
Asean Business Leaders: Can you give us an overview of SBC Corporation and what are the main projects that the company is currently focused on?
Sia Teong Heng: The SBC story began in the fifties, coinciding with Malaysia’s independence, when we broke through the dominance of larger, mostly foreign builders to deliver many of today’s Kuala Lumpur’s early landmarks. Corporate milestones include pioneering high rise towers in the capital city and fast tracking using precast building systems for the delivery of industrial accommodation. These days, reimagining brownfield sites into refreshing new destinations such as Jesselton Quay in Kota Kinabalu absorbs much of SBC’s interest, as sequels to our flagship projects such as “The Peak Collection@Signal Hill” in Kota Kinabalu & “Kiara East” in Kuala Lumpur.
Asean Business Leaders: Located in Borneo island, at the heart of the city center in Kota Kinabalu, SBC Corporation is one of the companies involved in the development of the Jesselton Quay ambitious project. Can you elaborate on that?
Sia Teong Heng: At SBC, we are excited about the potential of Jesselton Quay given its history as a natural port and its proximity to the cruise, ferry terminals & the new convention centre. With a strong endorsement from the Sabah state government we have assembled a world class team of experts in hospitality & technology to work on the redevelopment of Jesselton Quay, aiming to transform it into a world class destination. As we look forward to elevating the status quo of the city to the next level, our work is beyond property development; we prefer to call it “a journey in transformation” (of a city).
Asean Business Leaders: What is your strategy for the next coming years and what would you say sets SBC Corporation apart from competition?
Sia Teong Heng: Leveraging on SBC’s delivery record built over a six decade period, this unique trust capital allows us to tap on the investment pool of buyers, investors & finance to unlock landowners’ property values. Moving forward, we aim to bring our Jesselton Quay experience of developing integrated schemes to other communities so that we can also help them fulfil their aspirations.
Asean Business Leaders: Why Sabah and why Jesselton Quay?
Sia Teong Heng: Sabah’s future lies beyond its “underwritten” natural resources. This is because it is blessed with an enchanting heritage, green credentials and a strategic location, just below the Pacific Ring of Fire between North and South East Asia/Asia Pacific. Tourism in the state of Sabah, already booming, is set to scale even greater heights as airline connections to North Asia continues to increase. Upon its completion, Jesselton Quay, aims to lead in creation of a new waterfront city district to better serve this burgeoning trade & hospitality demand. In that regard we welcome strategic partners in hospitality and tourism related retail/commerce who are keen to be part of this new northern Borneo gateway.
