Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is a comprehensive public university established in November 1994. With a vision to be an innovative university of global standing, UMS strives to achieve excellence in various fields while producing specialized and balanced graduates.
UMS employs a holistic approach towards teaching and learning. This means that both theory and practice, as well as the personal growth of its students, are equally emphasized to get the best out of students’ academic development.
On top of offering 67 undergraduate courses, UMS provides postgraduate programs (at both Master’s and PhD level) in its ten faculties, which are the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition, Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, Faculty of Computing and Informatics, Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and
Heritage, Faculty of Psychology and Education, and Faculty of International Finance Labuan.
UMS is known for its research excellence, especially in seven key areas:

• Security and Public Transport,
• Indigenous Culture & Language.
In order to support its research endeavours, the UMS has established four research institutes, namely the Institute of Tropical Biology & Conservation, Borneo Marine Research Institute, Biotechnology Research Institute, and Borneo Institute of Indigenous Studies.
UMS is a strong advocate of green environment and sustainable development. Widely acclaimed as an eco-campus, UMS has become a popular local and international tourist destination in Sabah, Malaysia. Past and present activities of UMS are related to a number of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), putting UMS closer to its goals of becoming a SDGs-engaged university.
UMS efforts to increase graduates employability are further enhanced by the establishment of the Career and Alumni Centre as well as the Centre for Industry and Community Network
International student enrolment and mobility are increasing progressively. Meanwhile, UMS actively establishes academic and research collaborations with institutions in many countries. UMS is listed in the QS Asian University Rankings and World University Rankings, as well as in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
